Old Map

The town of Hullack lies on the East Way almost exactly in the center of Hullack Forest. It grew up around Hullack Keep and is growing in importance. The town serves a number of important purposes for the region. First, it supports the large detachment of Purple Dragons which keeps the forest relatively safe and guards the northeastern frontier of Cormyr. Second, it serves as an important waypoint for trade and caravans both entering and leaving Cormyr. Third, it serves as the gathering point for the resources of the barony for shipment to other cities in Cormyr.
The town's growth in size and population is not in proportion to its growth in economic and strategic importance to Cormyr. Lord Roderic is a ranger, and his task is to protect as well as pacify the forest, and he takes this task very seriously. He very strictly regulates how the forest may be used, and he also has strict building codes about how much and what may be built in the town itself. He recognizes the importance of the town, but he also recognizes the long-term importance of the forest to Cormyr and will not permit anything any town growth that is detrimental to the forest. He has a specific vision of what the life and culture of the town should be and he works to make that vision a reality.
There are two major roads in Hullack town. One of course, is the East Way. It is the main east-west thoroughfare through the town, twenty feet wide at all points, and one of Lord Roderic's ordinances is that no buildings may be built within 50 feet of either side of the road. This is to make sure that there is always plenty of room for caravans to pass through and the King's army to march through. This space also serves as the main assembly area for the temporary market tents and stalls during festival days.
The other major road is Hullack Road. It is a north-south road which runs along the west side of the keep. Until 1377, Hullack was a short road. To the north, it is a decent road up to the bridge crossing the creek. After that, it is nothing more than a dirt path. It curves a little to the west then back to the east, and ends about 100 feet south of Mielikki's Temple in the forest. To the south of the East Way, it dead-ended after just a few hundred feet. In the fall of 1376, King Izak ordered Lord Roderic to cut a road through the forest to Thunderstone. That road will start at the southern end of Hullack Road.

1. Hullack Keep
Home of Baron Hullack, Lord Roderic Tallman and garrison for large Purple Dragon force. The keep is the center of town, on the north side of the East Way. The keep is surrounded with a 20' high wooden wall with guard towers at each corner. There are two more guard towers on either side of the gate.

Details & Floor Plan

3. Durin's Armory
Armor and weapon shop run by Durin Ironchest, a dwarven Master Armorer and Weaponsmith. The shop is a 20'x30' one-story stone building on the south side of the East Way and immediately east of the front building of the inn. Durin's home is another 20'x30' one-story small stone building just southeast of his shop.

4. The Inn's stable and corral
This is a 30'x40' wooden building inside a 100'x100' fenced-in area diretly south of Durin's Armory that is for the use of the guests of Hullack Inn. Wagons and Carriages can be parked outside the corral, and the horses kept within. Henric Tallman and Durin Ironchest maintain this cooperatively, and Durin will often do simple smithing tasks like shoeing horses for guests. Durin does this only for inn guests, and does not do this for townsfolk in general.

5. Damin Obarskyr's Home
Damin lives here with his wife Tallia and children when he's not working with Durin in the Armory.

6. Henrym Obarskyr's Home
Henrym lives here with his wife Nel and children when he's not working with Durin in the Armory.

7. Umbringer's Jellies
This 40'x80' factory immediately west of Hullack Inn makes and sells gourmet jellies and jams and preserves. They also make a variety of nut-based spreads. Umbringer's Jellies is slowly but steadily gaining a reputation throughout Cormyr for the excellent spreads they make. Garth Umbringer (hm Pal12), a retired holy warrior and adventurer, owns the factory and runs it with the help of his five friends and their spouses. Garth has a special agreement with Henric Tallman by which he supplies all of the fruit and nut spreads that Tess' Restaraunt needs.

8. Baker
The baker's store is immediately west of the jelly factory on the south side of the East Way.

9. Cobbler
The cobbler's shop is a small 20'x30' building immediately east of the bakery.

10. Gareth Umbringer's home
This retired paladin (hm Pal12) lives in a two-story 20'x40' home that is directly south from the jelly factory he owns. The homes of his five friends and their families are clustered around his home.

11. Laundress
The laundress lives and works in a 20'x40' building on Hullack Road across from the general store's warehouse and south of the cobbler's shop.

12. Blacksmith and livery stable
This L-shaped building is across the Hullack Road from the leatherworker's shop. The blacksmith handles the common metalworking needs of the town, including making nails and horseshoes, and also keeps a small number of horses for sale.

13. General Store
This is an L-shaped building south of the East Way directly across from the temple to Helm.

14. Warehouse for General Store
The General Store keeps additional stock here.

15. Butcher
The butcher's shop is a 30'x30' building immediately south of the general store's warehouse.

17. Leather Worker's Shop
The leather worker's shop is a 30'x40' building immediately south of the furrier's shop.

18. Carpenter's Shop
The carpenter, Jothen Banus, does all kinds of work with wood, from building construction with lumber, to barrel making and wagon repair. His shop is a 40'x40' building directly west of the general store, and he also has a 20'x50' storage building for lumber directly south of his shop. Jothen's family -- wife Srin, daughter Brin, and son Larsrik -- live in the upper floor above the shop.

19. Rooming House
This 40'x80' two-story building on the south side of the East Way serves as cheap lodgings for miners and loggers that are passing through. The rates are 5 sp per person per night or 4 gp per tenday, and there is no guarantee of privacy. The owner thinks nothing of adding cots to rooms and cramming in as many guests as he can. He and his small staff keep the place clean and moderately warm, but provides no services past that.

20. Restaraunt
This 40'x50' one-story building west of the rooming house is a restaraunt that provides cheap and common fare. It is decent enough food for those possessing a less-refined palate, but those wishing something more should go to Hullack Inn. The restaraunt is open from sunrise to about an hour after sunset (which means the time it is open varies with the seasons) and serves breakfast, lunch and supper at the appropriate times. All meals are 1 sp apiece, and the price includes one tankard of beer or ale. Additional tankards are 1 sp apiece, but excess drinking is frowned upon. Drunkards are thrown out and drinkers are prompted to go to the tavern next door.

21. Tavern
This 50'x50' two-story building west of the restaraunt is a common tavern. It's patrons are mostly working commoners, usually lumberjacks, loggers and miners alons with a number of low-ranking Purple Dragons from the keep. The tavern is often a rowdy place, and a night where no fights take place is considered a quiet and slow night. Although the Dragons are often participants in the fights, their presence also makes sure the fights do not progress past fisticuffs into serious assault or injury. The tavern is not a restaruant, but does prepare and serve snack foods that go with drinking. The taproom and small kitchen are all on the first floor. The second floor is ostensibly housing for the owner and his staff, but is is a commonly known "secret" that a number of prostitutes work out of some of the upstairs rooms and that the owner receives a cut. The owner makes a clear distinction between serving wenches and prostitutes, though, and it is dangerous to one's health to make overtures to the taproom staff.

22. Durgan's Dairy Farm
This farm is the the home and business of Durgan Beldarsk (hm Ftr6). His dairy cattle provide the fresh milk and butter for the town, and he also keeps chickens to provide meat and eggs. The fenced in area in which his cattle graze is not open pasture; it is simply a section of forest he has cordoned off, as Lord Roderic does not allow clearcutting. Durgan's wife, Lureene (hf Clr3 of Chauntea) has seeded the area with grasses suitable for grazing and with Chauntea's help keeps the cattle fed.

23. Temple to Helm
The temple to Helm is on the north side of the road, immediately west of the keep.

24. Stonemason's Shop
This shop is a 30'x30' building immediately west of Helm's temple, north of the East Way. The building is his workshop. Many blocks of raw stone waiting to be worked rest on pallets and on the ground behind (on the north side of) his shop.

The seamstress' shop is a 30'x40' building directly west of the stonemason's shop.

26. Memorial Statue
This is a statue directly west of the seamstress' shop, comemmorating those fallen in the Battle of Hullack during the Sembian War of 1365. Lord Roderic commissioned Maddie Simmonds, another veteran of the battle, to sculpt it.

27. Candlemaker's Shop
This L-shaped one-story building directly west of the memorial statue is where the candlemaker lives. The front 40'x20' is her workshop and the back 20'x20' section is her living quarters.

28. Royal Assay and Moneychanger's Office
This office is a 20'x40' one-story office on the west side of Hullack Road, north of the temple to Helm. The official here is a royal servant who can test gems and precious metals to assay their purity and value. He also serves as the standard-keeper, and can verify that various measuring instruments (such as rulers and balance scales) meet royal standards.

29. Royal Surveyor's Office
This office is a 20'x20' one-story office immediately to the west of the Royal Assayer's Office. This royal appointee keeps survey and deed records, and will survey plots of land.

30. Beldrem Vaerderim, Cartographer
This is a 20'x20' two-story building north of the Royal Assay office and just across Hullack Road from the Keep where the cartographer Beldrem Vaerderim (hm Ftr6/Exp6) lives. He lives alone on the second floor, and he works on the first floor. The first floor is a single room containing a large table and a draftsman's table. The room is cluttered with map tubes, maps, surveyors' notes, and sheets with mathematical calculations and geographical notes.
[DM's Note: Beldrem Vaerderim is a middle-aged, single man who lives alone because he wishes to. A combination of injury and disease suffered years ago has left him both impotent and sterile, so he feels he has nothing to offer to any woman. He is now accustomed to his solitude and neither requires nor seeks companionship. He is a friend of Garth Umbringer's.]

31. Hullack Forestry Office
This 30'x20' single-story building is directly across the Hullack Road from the northwest tower of the keep. This is where Axil (hm Rgr?) works from to manage the forest and its resources. Lord Roderic appointed Axil to be the Forester for the Hullack Forest, and the two of them work closely together to manage the forest. They walk the fine line between preserving the forest and providing for the kingdom's needs. Loggers may only log at the direction of Lord Roderic through Axil, and any action that may affect the health or growth of the forest is regulated by him. Axil has a small number of rangers working under him to help him in this task.

This is the home of Lionar Natan Huntcrown and his wife Hellen. His house is a 40'×40' two-story wooden building. Hellen works from the home as a cartographer, selling her maps to a dealer in Suzail. Hullack Town's cartographer, Beldrem Vaerderim, does not care for the competition and will have no dealings with her.
Natan also has a 30'×60' wooden barn behind the house in which he keeps three horses, and attached to the barn is a small 15'×15' stone building containing a forge for smithwork.

Temple to Mystra
This is a temple devoted to the worship of Mystra. There are currently only two priestesses here, the head priestess (as yet unnamed) and Alynna.
Floor Plan

Temple to Mielikki
This temple was formed underground by Mielikki herself underneath a great and ancient living oak. The oak tree is possibly the largest in all of the Hullack, 50 feet in diameter at the base and 750 feet tall. There is an opening in the east side of the tree, and the root system forms a curving set of stairs down that curve southward then eastward. Under the tree, the root system forms a circular room about 80 feet in diameter. The root stairs end at the south end of the curved room, and there is an altar formed from the living wood of the tree at the north end of the room. The root system gives the room the appearance of having a vaulted ceiling. All surfaces in the room are the wood of the living tree, and appear to be finely polished despite being alive. The roots also form a smaller chamber to the north of the main room for the use of the temple priestess.
The current high priestess of the temple is Rashan Tallman (hef Clr18 of Mielikki), wife of Lord Roderic.
